Fainting is passing out and you can pass out sitting, standing or lying down. Doubt that it can happen when you are already asleep though.

Here, I got this from a medical website. It doesn't specifically say whether or not it can happen while you are lying down but you can hyperventilate, go into a coughing fit, etc while lying down and then pass out so simply being lying down does not gaurantee you will not faint.

What causes fainting?
Fainting, which is also called syncope, can be related to many different things. More than one thing may be the cause of fainting. Sometimes a specific cause for fainting can't be found.

Fainting can happen when not enough oxygen flows through your blood and into your brain. You lose consciousness, or "pass out," for a very brief time -- just a few seconds or minutes.

A sudden drop in your blood pressure can cause you to faint. Sometimes your heart rate and blood vessels can't react fast enough when your body's need for oxygen changes. This is very common among older people. It can happen when:

You stand up fast.
You work or play hard, especially if it's very hot.
You begin to breathe too fast (called hyperventilating).
You get very upset. Being upset can affect the nerves that control your blood pressure.
You're taking medicine for high blood pressure.
Coughing, urinating and stretching can also get in the way of the flow of oxygen to the brain and may be a cause of fainting. If you faint once during one of these activities, it's probably not something to worry about. But if it happens more than once, you should tell your doctor about it.

On a couple occasions recently I dreamt I was laughing so hard that I forgot to breath. In reality I was probably laying with my face flat out in my cushion. I suffocated, but in my dream I felt myself stopping with existing... It's a pretty intresting thing to experience and if you are afraid of death I geuss frightning too. The feeling of fading into eternal oblivion is amazing! So, unless you experienced such a thing, no you weren't. I dreamt I died many times, yet, I'm still alive.

Don't think so, because apparently you can't faint while you're lying down.

My dentist told me that - but he might have been lying to stop me panicking!!

sort of.. but apnea is worse than just faint, in some cases, your brain literally runs out of oxygen, so brain cells die. And people may die too,

no, fainting is caused by blood draining from your head, if you're laying down, your head is at the same level as the rest of your body and so blood can't drain from it
