You can but, why? You won't be able to tell the difference between the two processors! It's only a .2 difference in clock speed! Unless you have a problem with that Celeron's cache, that's the only thing that might be different between the two of these processors! You may as well get a new mobo and move up to a processor that will support 64-bit technology. Don't waste your money on old stuff. Re-use your memory and drives, unless you want to upgrade memory or add new drives. Then you'll have to re-activate Windows XP because they know the configuration of your computer, any major changes, you must re-activate. It's a hassle, but not hard by phone.

what socket 478? they are out of production, socket 775.. they have specific chipset for a given series of pentiums, intel really goosed that one up..the other person who said you would note the difference between a celeron 2.6 and a p4 2.8 does not know what he is talking about, sure it's only a 200 mhz increase, but you get he full advantage of the full L2 cache instead of the reduced cache the celerons have

No you can't use the same motherboard,.., u gotta change it. I'd wait for couple of more years to see if something new comes this way....2.6 ghz even for celron is pretty much fast for a home pc....and there's not much difference between the speeds' i'd wait until p-5 comes along if i were you

Refer to your motherboard manual for compatibility with other processors or you can probably find your motherboard online and it should tell you there.
