I have lived in North Carolina and I know that they make the best furniture around. Try Broyhill or Thomasville

One thing you should know is that very little furniture made today is solid wood. That is the first thing you should check. Even high-end furniture is likely to be veneer over a particle board or MDF substrate. For this reason alone, there will be very few antiques from our era - particle board simply doesn't last. I have seen $20,000 armoires and entertainment centers that had to be totalled after sitting on a wet floor. So check and see if the piece you're interested in is solid wood. The salesman may not know, and he may not be honest.

The term "solid wood" is a legal term, and to misuse it is a crime. There's nothing wrong with veneer over hardwood plywood, this is solid wood. The best way to tell is to demand to see the bottom of the piece. Examine the edges. In most cases you'll be able to tell if the substrate is wood or particle board. However, some manufacturers go to great lengths to disguise these edges with strips of veneer. This is the reason for looking at the bottom instead of the back.

Be aware that solid wood furniture will cost much more than furniture built of cheaper materials. And don't be fooled by weight. Many people say, "You can tell it's solid wood, just see how heavy it is." Actually particle board is much heavier than wood.
