FREAKZILLA, we have a place something like that... it's called CALIFORNIA. They've already got a good head start on a bunch of screwed up laws.

nquizzitiv, you bring up a good point. Since homosexuality is an abomination in pretty much all religions (I don't know of any real ones that support it) can you really say the bonds of "holy" matrimony? I mean isn't marriage really just a religious thing?

michael941260, That's pretty funny. Called me an idiot. And you're the guy that asked if anyone wears a jock strap when they work out... and had to say (guys only)? I don't about the kind of women you hang out with, but I don't know any girls that wear jock straps. You also asked who uses Yahoo answers, ON yahoo answers. Hmm. I wonder if any users will answer the question.
And my favorite.... Are you embarrassed buying condoms? That's funny. Why are you embarrassed? Is it because you have to buy toilet paper at the same time so you'll have it to wipe the crap of the condom when you're done?

Learn the basics of an issue before embarrassing yourself with an ignorant question. They're attempting to gain the same rights as everyone else. That includes marriage, so obviously, it would also include the right to divorce.

And "FREAKZILLA", to paraphrase Shakespeare, "the man doth protest too much." Hate like that can only come from self-loathing. Face it, man; you're gay. You can't help it. It's the way you were born. Just come to terms with it and the hate will subside.

What kind of logic is that? With marriage comes the possibility of divorce. Would you make divorce illegal for heterosexuals? This is why I think it's stupid for gay people to even want to "enter into the bonds of holy matrimony." There's nothing holy about it -it's already been desecrated many times over by straight people who cheat on their spouses and divorce regularly. I say gays should find other ways to get a tax break and just live together without the bullsh*t piece of paper that already means nothing to straight people.

Right, let's start with your response on the Churches ---

United Church of Christ (direct descendants of the Pilgrims)
Unitarian-Universalists ( also direct descendants of the Pilgrims)
Most Episcopal dioceses and many parishes even in opposed dioceses (3rd Oldest Branch of the Western Tradition overall -- the Episcopal Church is the CoE [Church of England] branch for the United States)
Most ELCA [Evangelical Lutheran Church in America] parishes
Many United Methodist
Reform Judaism (by far the largest branch of Judaism -- the oldest of the Abrahamic faiths)
The Brethren

Now, while I understand that you are attempting to preclude people arguing that faith traditions you don't like are actually religions -- that of course is bogus in any country that claims to be religiously plural -- so

Nearly all branches of neo-Paganism and Wicca (by far the fastest growing religion in the Western world in terms of percentages -- it will be interesting to see if it slows down in 20 years when it reaches a certain size, or speeds up. The newest version of an ancient religion that more or less comes out of the worship of the goddess Iannana and the sacred feminine -- in its various historical forms this religion preexists Judaism, the oldest of the Abrahamic faiths and has survived repeated purges since at least about 800 BC. [the largest tradition in the United States is probably Correllian Natavist -- which at the moment is above half a million adherents. Covenant of the Goddess I think is at 350,000 -- but I'm less sure of that. Various other groups are of various sizes.])

If you look for legal status, these groups are legal 501c3s. If you look for age, even though the modern incarnation is only, perhaps a hundred years old at most -- the faith tradition from which it came is thousands of years old -- and to not acknowledge continuity even with changes in doctrine would mean also throwing away recent Christian subgroups -- of which there are thousands.

So, whether you look for just Christian faiths (which would be the act of a religious bigot) or not -- there certainly are historically and theologically valid faiths that embrace homosexuality and do NOT and in some cases NEVER DID consider it an abomination.

Then. Gay divorce ---

I think that it reflects the similarness between gay and straight couples. 50% of all straight marriages end in divorce. An additional fraction, though I don't know how large, ends up with what amounts to effective permanent separation. Many of those who stay together live separate lives and share a house -- particularly after the children are gone -- often with no emotional connection at all. The rest, significantly less than half, perhaps no more than 20% have actual life long committed and functional relationships.

Why would gay couples be different?

Any of our friends, straight or gay -- even, frankly, fundamentalists who are acquainted with us and disapprove -- would admit, and have said, that we (Jonathan and I) are the most successful couple they know. It is true, we are a successful couple, we love each other after almost 15 years, we still have regular sex, we accommodate one another's needs and we allow for one another's foibles. We have argued with raised voices less than 5 times in 15 years --- still, shouldn't MOST couples be able to say that? They can't -- gay, straight or other.

I expected that there would be separations among the newly married gay couples. I expect that there will be divorces. It's part of life. It would be nice if our percentages were lower -- but I don't expect it -- people are people, and most people are self-centered. Someone has to elect in any relationship to be the one ultimately willing to subordinate him or herself after the discussion is done -- if the other one won't. It has to be a conscious decision, and it has to be done in every relationship. Traditionally in straight marriage it has been the woman. For the relationship to also be healthy you have to be able to do it without bitterness, recrimination or rancor -- otherwise you have to be ready to separate.

Fewer people these days are so willing.

*shrug*

As I said, its the way people are.

They should make any divorce illegal!

Make sure before you get married and if you made a mistake deal with it, especially if you have children.

Becoming abusive or an alcoholic is not dealing with it!

They should make it illegal to get married if you are
under 30 years of age!
Basically cutting all divorce statistics in half,
is that not true Britney? Kevin what do you think?

Only if you wish to make divorce illegal for everyone. That means that every man or woman who is beaten by their spouse must remain married to them until one of them dies and every man or woman must tolerate their spouses infidelity, even if the result is an incurable infectious disease. No excuses, no exceptions.

Why should getting divorced if you're gay be illegal?

That's the most paradoxal thing I've ever heard.

Um...since Wisconsin doesn't let us get formally married yet, I would have to disagree with you. As for the divorce thingy, thanks I don't need it. We've been together for 25 years. Other people might though, so we better just leave it open...the heteros can't have all the lawyers to themselves now can they?

Well, since straight people get married and divorced and are called "human", I'm sure gay people deserve to be "human" as well.
