Like in NASCAR or other Motor Sports, what does it do to the cars?

Definition: When a car travels through the air it leaves a gap behind it. Another car driving in this gap doesn't have as much air resistance pushing on it's nose and can then travel faster or use less fuel to travel the same speed.

You use less fuel and can get faster times because the car ahead of you is cutting through the wind, and it kind of feels like the lead car is dragging you along. If you want to feel it ride your bicycle next to a highway, when a tractor trailer drives by and you feel sucked toward it you just drafted.

The down side is you can overheat since fresh air isn't getting to your radiator.

the lead vechile is hitting the air infront of it at whatever speed the car is doing...this creates wind resistance, slowing the car. but behind the car the air is moving at the car speed, so a vechile right behind the lead car does not have to have as much power to "push" through the air resistance because the air is not resisting as much as it is around the same speed...and so drafting helps cause it consumes less feul so you can go longer than the guy in front...you also see this in olympic 4 man bicycling at the veledrome...

drafting does make you go faster and it does cut the wind the most important thing is that it saves on gas and when another driver has to pit he might be able to stay out one or two extra laps and if there is only one or two extra laps left in a race and you are in second or third place and everyone runs out of gas you can keep going to the finish line and maybe win the race if you are lucky
