In order to make your icons smaller, you need to raise your screen resolution. Now, raising your screen resolution does two things:
1) It makes your icons and desktop items look smaller
2) but ultimately having a higher resolution lets you see more of your programs.
This becomes applicable when you have a larger monitor and you don't need to see as much detail; if you'd rather 'take a step back' to see everything better.
If you have the Windows operating system, right click on your desktop and select 'properties' from the dropdown. Then go to the 'settings' tab, and slide the slider to the right to increase the resolution.

You need to increase your resolution.
Right-click on the desktop, select Properties. Click on the Settings tab, and you'll see a slider under Screen Resolution. Dragging that to the right will make the resolution higher and the icons appear smaller, giving you more space to work with.
Standard resolutions are 800x600,1024x768,1280x1024, and 1600x1200.
If your monitor or video card can't handle a higher resolution, you won't be able to select it. That slider will only have settings you can change to.
Hope this helps.

Right click on the desktop and select properties from the menu.
Then change the screen size - if you are currently at 800 x 600, change to 1024 x 768. Bigger numbers = smaller icons.

On your desktop right click and choose Properties.
Click the Settings Tab and then adjust your screen resolution to be higher.
If you're not running XP, the choices my be slightly different but in the same area.
Good luck!
