It depends on the following factors:
-- level of education
-- level of experience
-- state minimum pay set by legislature
-- district bonuses (Title 1, etc.)
Average pay for all teachers nationwide is $41,000 or so. However, average STARTING teacher pay (no prior experience) is about $29,500.
Some districts offer bonuses for special ed, some don't (mine doesn't).... as in a couple extra hundred dollars a year or so.

You'll find a wide disparity when it comes to teacher salaries. Most of the teachers I know make in the $40s... but they have been teaching for over 20 years. Beginning teachers may start earning $30K, some a little less, and some a little more. Seems hard to believe with the cost of college that we still are able to have people enter the field. If you're considering the profession, make sure you love it. If you're just thinking about a paycheck, you'll be disappointed. Consider business, law, or medicine if earnings are important to you.

As a special educator, I make exactly the same as my "regular" education co-workers. I teach in Missouri and with just a BS and 3 certifications and with 24 years experience, I make $43,000 per year.

It all depends on your education level, how long you've worked in your position, what type of placement (public vs. private school) that you work in and the salary that the teacher's union (for public schools) has negotiated. In a public school, they are paid the same as regular education teachers. In my humble opinion, all teachers are underpaid.
