whether a war is a world war or not is to a large extent arbitary (or, if you prefer, PR).

Why isn't the period when european pilgrims slashed and maimed their way through the "middle east", North Africa, the americas, India, Indonesia, Australia called world war 1?

Iraq's borders were drawn in "ww1". The fragmentation of the Ottoman Empire into todays states was an embarrassment to Britain, which, only able to do business with Christians, kept the rest of the empire in check under a banner called the Commonwealth.
Call it ww3 if you like, but what's going on now is a continuation of a war that has raged over the western world since the fall of Rome. But now at least we can talk about it without being dissappeared, in some places.
