I have a damage Kitchen countertop laminated with Formica, i want to know what is the easiest and least expensive way of removing the laminate from the counter without damaging the counter itself.
The counter is made of plywood, in case it makes a difference.

Liminate is the easy part, the glue under it is the hard part..Does it have sq edges or rolled..Best bet is to take the top off, just screwed on and put a new press board one in its place..All you need is a sabor saw for sink cut out.. You can get it cut for you where you buy the wood.. then your ok.. Glue down your liminate and use a router to trim the edges..All the tools are under $75.00.. Good Luck.. your friend from Tennessee...ROB

Removing laminate from a plywood base is difficult, I do not recommend using solvent ( thinner ) for a couple of reasons, one is it is extremely flammable and two - the vapors are toxic. It is also very hard to do when the counter is attached to the cabinets. The other options are to use a heat gun to gently heat the laminate while prying it up with a flat tool such as a wide bladed putty knife. The best way is to remove the counter top from the cabinets then completely sand the entire surface and re- cover with new laminate. For the cost of the tools and materials needed to accomplish this, I would recommend spending a few more dollars to hire a professional to do the job for you!

The Formica is glued down with contact cement, so you will have to get some contact cement thinner, It comes in either a spray or can. First you will have to find a lose part to start at, and with a little luck just pry up at the spot until you can get some thinner between the Formica and the counter top, then keep spraying and prying. This is not a easy or quick fix it will take some time depending on the size of you top, maybe all day. But this will not damage you counter top and you can then replace it with your new Formica. But be sure your work area is well Vented. Or another way is to glue down 1/4 inch or plywood over the Formica and then your choice of new Formica

Be careful with torches. Try an Iron with a cloth between the iron and the benchtop. Experiment slowly as the glue with soften and use a scraper to take the laminate off. Be gentle as you could cut your hands on any jaggered edges. Make sure the room is well ventilated. Hope that helps Michael.M

Recently I was going to do the same but I was told that the glue that is used is so powerful that you do damage wood underneath and that is why it is usually either laminated on top of the old laminate- which I was not recommended to do, or buy new countertop as it's almost as cheap to install.

heat. in the car repair business sometimes you need to remove something that is glued on without damaging the underside, to do this we used a hair dryer on roids.lol no seriously your local home depot or auto repair store should carry them(heat gun). if $$ is tight a regular hair dryer will work just take longer. start on on corner and as the adhesive breaks down lift with a five in one tool. once you have something to grab hold of (using gloves) grab the corner and with the heat gun or dryer continue heating the adhesive and peal. it might take some time but provided they used the right glue it should peal up leaving the underneath warm but undamaged. good luck be safe have fun
