I don't know where you are, but I've seen and read of plenty of protests on US campuses about tuition hikes. I won't say where I've seen, because I prefer to remain anonymous, but I have seen protests (pickets, flyers, handbills, assembly, etc) specifically about tuition hikes.

You are contradicting yourself.
quote you
"I always see people protest things such as tuition hikes"
then
"our colleges constantly raise tuition and no one utters a word"
????
And, I read your question a few times to see if I missing something.
I think Americans are too busy working to take time to protest.

American never protest: Oh my u must be young as Americans were the biggest protesters of the Viet Nam WAR.(Research American Draft Dodging to get a better idea of what I'm refering to.)
They also protested the seal hunting in Newfoundland with Brigette Bardot as their leader, even tho' they did not understand the reasons for seal hunting.(I'm a Newfie & I don't like the seal hunting, but I understand the reasons 4 it.)
Americans have been protesting everything from abortion to war for a long time.
Muslims in America had an anti-American protest over a Newsweek "Quran in the tiolet"article even tho' Newsweek retracted the article(.Maybe they had a point & Newsweek should have researched their story better before rushing it off the presses.)
AS 4 Native Americans they've been protesting 4 years. One of their biggest protest was the Denver Columbus Day Parade(Oct./92.) which caused the parade to be cancelled, The Parade was to be the" AGE OF DISCOVERY" parade. They were joined by groups of African-Americans,Hispanic-Americans & Korean-Americans in soliditary calling Columbus's discovery 500 yrs. of Resistance.(1942-1992)
If u want to protest the rise in your tuition fees, you & your fellow students need to try & get the college to listen to your points on this subject or start uttering words on this issue LOUD & CLEAR.****. FREEDOM OF SPEECH is still the 1st ammendment in USA & all other civilized countries.(CANADA being one if u live here.)

Americans protest in small groups, but we've become such a divided people, we don't have the capibility to protest significantly in large numbers.
Take the Revolution for example, their most effective tool against England was boycotting, but in today's America, we've grown too dependant on filling up the car every week to organize an effective gas boycott.
The American individual is very comforatble and for some reason can't bear to go without too long to make a difference, for something bigger than just yourself. It's very unfortunate.

That is the way things go . The problem lies with past students who fail to repay loans. So every year the colleges get a new debt to add to the next years tuition. It is a cycle that will not end until colleges refuse to let people without money in.

its called diffusion of responsibility. We can't do much because our government and whoever the authorities are will always have the last word no matter what. Besides, us as Americans are far too lazy to protest for more than an hour or two anyway.

Never protest?
You must not live in the US. We protest all the time. If you only have tuition to yell about you got it good.

Because we have become docile to the idea of protesting.
Americans, if we want our country back we should protest like France did and SHUT THE COUNTRY DOWN for as long as it takes.

Because to formerly protest, you must let your city or state know you are going to have a protest and you have to submit permission to, so that way the cops ca nbe prepared. but honestly, I think it's the government's subliminal way to withold our civil rights.
