So what if we cannot recognize a beautiful actress after undergoing a heavy make-up job? Does that make her perfomance better? There are so many other actresses that could have done as good or better a job in that role.

Not a bad point made project.. And yes, I am in an overrated mood..lol
However, there are many other actresses who could have done as good or better. And Charlize is a solid actress. Is her performance one of the great acting jobs of all time? I do not think so. My point is that the academy loves the hype but not the substance.

Crurious, Thank You. Well made point. Perhaps we should add "Monster's Ball" to the overrated list? These are movies that are all about the hype and in reality are not better than 90 percent of the independent movies produced every year (that do not have the money for promotion).

I agree, just because a "glamour" actress goes natural, or even "ugly" in a performance, for some reason it's automatically Oscar material. Not just Charlize Theron, but Halle Berry did the same thing in" Monster's Ball", and she won an Oscar. "Monster's Ball" was a horrible piece of tripe. The guy that helped pull the "switch" at her husband's execution, becomes her lover, yeah, right! It's a shame what some women feel they have to do to be recognized for their craft. Dressing down, or doing a long graphic sex scene, shouldn't have to be what talented actresses like Charlize Theron and Halle Berry have to do to win acting awards!

I'm gonna pick on you, you are in an over-rated mood tonight!!

Charlize Theron did not win the Academy Award because she put on make-up and we couldn't recognize her. Eddie Murphy and Martin Lawrence aren't getting awards for becoming fat in their roles, but they are still considered funny when they do it. She did an outstanding job in that role, and yes, she had to go under make-up, but all actors do that when given the chance. If you can name for me one decent actress who could have also played that role, then do so, but the minute you name an actress who is also beautiful, then your opinion is going to mean less. So many other actresses probably tried for the role, she got it, she earned it, she won the acclaim for it. It wasn't a hand-out.

That may be true, but how many actresses would have actually gone through the turmoil of gaining the weight for the role and then losing it again? Charlize did a great job with it and it takes real dedication and desire to deal with all that weight stuff.

Lifetime Movies also made a movie about this and it starred the blonde from "Designing Women" - Jean Smart. I have a problem with pretty women in Hollywood winning reviews and awards for doing things such as naked, sexual acts (which rape is not a sexual act) but it just seems to me that if you portray a lesbian, or someone raped, or do explicit sexual acts (such as in Monster's Ball), that gets you more noticed as a "good actress". Let's face it - Hollywood is full of "beauties" - I just think that it is sad that one has to do something demeaning to be recognized.
