American Gods, by Neil Gaiman. I now put all books into two categories; the ones I read before AG, and the ones I've read since. But at a tie is I Am Legend, by Richard Matheson; a chilling and exhilirating tale of one man's fight to survive among quasi-vampires after biological warfare has decimated the human race.

the best book I've ever read is in fact three books, a trilogy.
Stephen Donaldson's "The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant" all of them were a simply brilliant read from beginning to end. If I was ship wrecked on a desert island those are the books I'd want with me.

"The Iron Man", by Ted Hughes. A powerfully written text by a now sadly deceased Poet Laureate. I enjoyed this as a child and still happily revisit it now.
