We are more free than we think we are. Society thrusts "norms and roles," as you say, on us and expects us to follow them, and to a large part we do. This doesn't make us any less free, though, for we can choose to break out of the norms at any time. It only disguises our freedom, and makes us think we have no choice but to follow the rules.

Are we truly free? Independence is continually being fought within ourselves from our family, our friends and our neighbors. People would like for individualist to be more like the average person - no spiked colored hair, no same sex marriages, no staying out all night and never calling home, no responsibility... We all have to weigh the pros and cons of our actions and desires. To know when need to be responsible and care free. To not harm others in any way. To understand these boundaries, then we can be truly fee. How? We'll know how to get around them or fight for what we believe in.

All depends on what aspect you are speaking of? Are we politically free? No. Are we socially free? No. etc. You see we only have control over one thing and thats yourself. Everything in the Universe is controlled by something or someone. Who controls your way of thinking?....You do. We are as free as we allow ourselves to be.
