Other than hiding what's in the tank, what purpose does the tank lid serve? Thanks

The lid really has a purpose. It covers the ugly hardware inside, and keep objects from falling in and clogging up the draining system. It also slows the evaporation by hiding the light and air.
Water will evaporate faster if it's exposed to air and light.

Don't know about the lid but I sure catch heck for not putting the seat back down. It must be alot more important than the lid. lol

have you ever accidently dropped something in the toilet? That's what the lid's for. I've dropped whole rolls of toilet paper, razors, keys, all sorts of stuff, when people leave the lid up.

It helps to keep any splashing water when the tank is filling from going everywhere. And it gives you a place to put extra paper rolls.
