Actually....... Saab is the safest car in the world. They allow Volvo to make the claim (on safety, Volvo doesn't claim to be the safest, in fact no manufacturer does) because Volvo makes their Jet engines.
Now as far as reliability, the Saab is far and away a better vehicle. I worked for Saab for many years and even went to training in Norcross at their US Headquarters. They have a proud heritage and make a VERY nice car.

Now that FORD has its hands all over Volvo it is getting worse. I would recommend the Saab any day of the week. I own a 2000 9-5 with 80,000 miles and love it. It is my 3rd Saab.

Of course drive them and see which one you like better, if one is more comfortable etc.... weigh the pros & cons.

Good Luck

I have a 2001 Volvo S60 and love it. They are easier and cheaper to repair than Saabs, as well.

I would consider going up to the S60, if I were you, because the S40 is very small.

Both - Saab for fun when you're by yourself on a twisty road, Volvo for safety with the family.
