There are tons of great mechanics out there. What you want is some one who tells you the truth. Did they take the time to get all the details of whats going on with your car? Make sure you get something in writing about what they are planning to do not just a dollar amount, that way you know where your money is going. Look over the work order does it make sense? If your go in for an oil service and a check engine light does the work order clearly state that? Does it say inspect and advise? Ask your mechanic what training he or she has, do they keep up on the latest information, do they have the equipment to check out your car, are there co-workers trained to use it?
Bottom line is a good shop will take the time to go over all this with you because they want you to trust them. Its you that pays their bills.

I would have to say that the answer lies in word of mouth recommendations. If other people have had good service out the same mechanic then that is a good sign that he is honest and good at what he does. It is true that just because you are in business does not mean that you know what you are doing. Just ask around at work and church. A good, honest mechanic has a reputation somewhere and somebody knows who he is.

A good honest mechanic will listen intently and pay attention to you when you explain your problem, he will also ask you questions and try to extract as much information as he can from you in order to diagnose the problem as best he can. He will give you a written estimate in as much detail as he can before he begins work on your car and will have you sign it.

Don't accept anything less than a professional attitude from him.

You can tell by word of mouth from other people.
If you can find one, most of them will fix your car, or if they can't they will tell you. The best way to tell is from the first line I wrote at the top.
