When I was first prescribed this drug, I was terrified of multiples, i.e. quints, etc, partly because my doctor didn't explain ANYTHING to me when he wrote the prescription, only when and for how to long to take it. The job of this drug is stimulate the ovaries to release an egg. Given that, it's possible that more than one can be released since the drug can't say "only one, please". I, in fact, was not ovulating, but I know it is sometimes prescribed to women who do, even if irregularly, whether by mistake or because previous attempts have failed. Through my own research I found that even when on this drug, your chance for twins is about 8-10% (up from around 1% naturally) and triplets are "rare", which gave me relief about the 5-at-a-time thing.
I have, fortunately, been able to conceive with this medication, but it's still too early to tell how many are in there. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for one, especially since I'm not sick and I know that often with multiples your symptoms are worse. But, I have resigned myself to the idea that twins would be okay, too. If I'm going to have trouble getting pg for the rest of my life, why not get my quota (my husband and I always wanted 2) done right away, right?
Don't sweat it, stress will only reduce your chances of conceiving. Take care of yourself, and if you get pregnant, take your blessings as they come. If your doctors won't give you any info, do some reasearch on your own. I started with Yahoo! Health and WebMD, but don't stop there, find out as much as you can, it'll help ease your mind. Good luck.

I've been on Clomid before, and am currently on it again. I have had several doctors and done research about it. It is primarily for women who do not ovulate. It does not necessarily make you ovulate more than one egg, although there is a chance of it. They say that the day that you take it can affect the quality or quantity of the eggs, so if you take it day 3-7, there is a higher chance of more than one egg. I haven't found anything to prove that it will do anything for a woman that already ovulates. It may up the chances of twins very slightly, but I wouldn't bank on it.

clomid assists ovulation. clomid regulates the hormones that stimulate egg production. last month was my first clomid run. i was on 50mg daily on days 5-9. when i went in for my ultrasound i had 14 (yes, i said 14) eggs that were developing but they weren't ready yet. a few days later i went back for another ultrasound (i'm going through artificial insemination) and ALL OF THE EGGS WERE GONE, they just disolved... absorbed... all 14 failed. i'm "patiently" waiting for my period so i can start another cycle now. my doctor has increased my clomid to 100mg daily on days 5-9. if my eggs are fully mature when it's ultrasound time i will be given an injection called "pregnyl" it is a 10,000 unit shot (max doseage). it's a hormone that causes the eggs to spill out (some will be mature, some not).
clomid does increase your odds of multiples to roughly 18%
clomid combined with pregnyl increases your odds to 51%
IF you have more questions you can e-mail me!
BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!

The chances of multiple births with chlomid is much lower than with other fertility drugs. It will make you ovulate and if you are ovulating may cause you to release more than one egg. I took it to conceive my frst child who is now 8 and my cousin took it conceive her frst son who is now 9.

It can be prescribed for different reasons for different women's cases. In your case it's to help you ovulate. It may make you have more than one ripened egg but it's very rare, usually it's just one egg.

Clomid makes you ovulate period...whether you are already ovualting or not. That's why they tell you that it can result in multiple births.
