The first step is to stop worrying. A large amount of stress can compromise your baby's well being. Second of all, don't worry about smoking and drinking. If you are smoking and drinking in the first couple of weeks before you can even take a pregnancy test, it won't hurt the baby, just make sure to stop as soon as you know you are pregnant. If you are already fit, continue exercising like normal, running is fine for the first few months, just be sure to do a different type of sit-ups. The ones where you are already sitting up and lean half way back then sit back upright are the best during pregnancy. If you are in bad shape, consult a doctor before choosing an exercise regime, but make sure to continue to exercise throughout your pregnancy, it will make giving birth so much easier. Seriously the key to a healthy baby is to stop any risky behavior once you find out, keep exercising, and not worry about it. OH, and the book, What to Expect When You are Expecting, will make you more nervous and upset than anything. If you need a book, The Baby Book by Dr. Sears is helpful.
Good luck

Eat right, stay fit, try not to gain too much weight (more than 20 or 30 pounds), and don't drink or do drugs. Take a multivitamin. And go to the doctor regularly. Being absolutely freaked out comes with the territory, but trust me, once the baby comes it's going to be the most normal and natural thing to have her or him around. Don't worry about moving around too much, the baby is very well protected inside the womb. Relax, everything will be fine.
I recommend getting the book "What to Expect When You're expecting"
(PS - this is just the start of a life time of worrying. Welcome to parenthood!)

Can't tell if you are already pregnant or not, but some things are simple either way. Don't smoke, take prenatal vitamins (even if you are not pregnant, if you are trying, prenatals are great for keeping your body ready), eat right, exercise. If you are already pregnant, see your doctor, and as long as he okays it, exercise (he will tell you what is safe), eat right, take your vits, see your OB/GYN on schedule, don't smoke, don't drink, and don't stress. Some stuff there is nothing you can do to aviod the baby being sick, most of it is just common sense and rest and relaxation. If you are pregnant and drank while pregnant, don't worry, I got plastered when I was six weeks pregnant with my daughter and didn't know it, and she is just fine, perfectly healthy. I drank wine about once a month with her, too (full stomach, and only one glass with dinner, to absorb the wine). I didn't touch it with my son, and he is no less demented than his sister (he he he). Talk to your doctor, and he will let you know if you are at risk for any complications that require extra caution.

Just start eating a healthy balanced diet, take a folic acid supplement, quit smoking and drinking, exercise, and have fun. Being pregnant isn't that scary. I'm 14wks. Check out these two websites for information and buy a few books. The more information you have there won't be an unknown to be afraid of.

I don't understand whether you are already pregnant or not. In any case, as you said, feeling scared/anxious is normal. One way you can start feeling a little calmer is to go to your library and check out a book on pregnancy. You'll learn a lot, and remember that women have been doing this since the beggining of time, so you can do it too.
PS: if you are already pregnant, the right time to smoke doesn't exist. Simply don't do it.

Stop smoking before trying to conceive. Begin taking a vitamin with folic acid (which helps prevent birth defects) and read up on pregnancy.

Hey, get the book, What To Expect When your Expecting by Heidi Murkoff - it will take a load of your shoulders! By reading it, you will know what to expect the whole nine months, and you will know what to do and what not to do while pregnant. It will also help you learn about the symptoms that pregnant women go through - and will also tell you what's normal and what's not. It's like a Pregnancy Bible - it really helped me through my first pregnancy, even with what to expect during labor and delivery. They also have a website, I believe it's: http://www.whattoexpect.com
Goodluck!
