Both of the above answers are correct. Generally the urge to urinate is greater in the AM, especially if a person has not urinated during the night. Another cause for erection is due to dream stimulation. It is a well-known fact that some men are known to ejaculate during their sleep (wet dreams). This rarely happens with women. Unfortunately. Sometimes, waking with an erection can actually stimulate a male into wanting sex.

It's nature's way of letting us know that every thing is in working order. We wake up and open our eyes, so we're assured we can see. We yawn and stretch, which says the jaws and muscles are working. Then we look down and say, 'alright, my genitalia's OK.
Either that, or, it's natures way of preventing us from wetting the bed. You see, some time in the wee hours of the morning we begin to need to go. By the time we wake up we can hardly wait, and the only thing that's saved us from having embarrassed ourselves is just the condition you're curious about. For the fact of the matter is, it's nearly impossible to piss through a hard d!#k.
And the last is really the truth. It's known as a piss hard, and can also occur when a man has been drinking a lot of beer.

There may be some aspect of arousal in the morning, but generally it is not the case. It has been reviewed that erections throughout the night may help decrease the chance of erectile dysfunction later in life as it supplies blood flow more frequently. If this is truely the case, morning wood may be a evolutionary event enabling men to procreate into their later years.
Another thought related to that is after sleeping through the night, your body is more rested and more capable of procreating. Most often the body has fasted from intercourse, has not eaten yet causing potential diversion of blood flow from the groin to the stomach, and so is more fully capable of reproducing. Women may also be more receptive for similar reasons and more relaxed and more open for their eggs to be fertilized.

Well none of the answers is right. The truth is that the testosterone hormone reaches its climax during sleeping time and especially when waking up in the morning after a long night sleep. Testosterone, the male hormone is responsible for the erection beside the fact that it's behind the male's sexual desire and aggressiveness.

Many men think their penises are erect upon waking because of urine buildup in the bladder, but this is false. Morning erections are technically nighttime erections which happen during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep (when most dreaming occurs), although men older than sixty years may have them during even non-REM sleep. Generally, we experience four intervals of REM sleep per night. These spontaneous woodies in the wee hours are caused by specific neuroreflexes that are stimulated during REM sleep.
Most guys have nocturnal erections throughout their lifetime, and their frequency, along with one's awareness of them, may vary. Nighttime/morning erections can be noticeably harder or stiffer than those had when awake. The penis can stay erect for up to two hours nightly, and not all men who have erections during the night wake up with one in the morning.

Many factors....first when the guy sleep his body function switch to the relax situation (parasympathatic) which make erection occure.second hormons play a role in this and we know that some hormons rise at the morning.third the pressure inside the urinary bladder excite the reseptors responsible for this arousal and this make the erection

It's called a pee hard, but it's not because of that, most men get multiple erections during the night, it's that you wake up with one, not get one.

The reason to your question is because the bladder is full and needs to relieve it is the pressure that does this.
