In my experience cross dressers are often regarded as gay because they hang out in gays bars, because they don't get hassled there. Already from some of the answers I see posted people are saying look up 'drag queen' but that is not specifically relevant to you, as you've already stated you aren't gay!! The short of it is you are going to dress up in public you're going to get opinions and assumptions, but I'm sure you can deal with that. The gay community is a place where you can find more support and friends who you can go out with for safety in nos if nothing else. However like any other hobby or fetish it's there to be enjoyed. So, do so and never feel like you have to justify yourself - good luck!!!

There are some gay bars where "drag queens," men who dress and make up to look like women are welcome. I've not been to any where a guy can just throw on women's clothes and hang out with his hairy chest and beard. But even then, you'd be in a GAY bar and if you are indeed straight, that's not a good solution. There are social groups for cross dressers in bigger metro areas. Check the Internet for groups near you. Search terms "crossdressing" "transvestite" and "drag queen"

It depends on your area.. Crossdressers are considered drag queens in some places and are just considered being themselves in others... Gay bars are the best place to be, as they do not treat you like your not normal! They are more respective to you. Good Luck@!

Most gay bars I've been in welcome drag queens -- you can overdo it, make it look realistic, or underdo it -- but I agree about hanging out with beard and chest hair -- at least make some effort.
I think you will find very few gay men will hit on a drag queen. I certainly wouldn't -- but I would be friendly and welcoming.
Good luck,
Reyn

There are transvestite organizations. All you have to do is google them. I would try learning all you can from online groups and clubs before venturing out. Gays are more tolerant of cross dressers, but that doesn't mean every gay accepts them. Be careful.

You would more likely be welcome at a gay bar than a straight bar in your chosen attire, but I don't give good odds of you meeting a woman there. Your question is a tough one!

Try it in your own home with friends and/or family first.
People can be narrow-minded and cruel. So prepare yourself for the worst! ( And hope for the best! )
Good Luck!

It is not big deal. You would just be another drag queen. You may get snickered at behind your back if you are really ugly, though.
