Actually, E. coli cultures have a distinctive smell that I can recognize. I have worked with them in the lab for years. They smell most like brackish water, but not entirely unlike poop.

Does poop smell like E. coli or do E. coli smell like poop?

E Coli you likely wouldn't be able to identify, as it's just a bacteria that is present in the human or animal digestive tract. Most starins are harmless, but those that aren't you'd never be able to identify... it's microscopic. The toxic E coli found in contaminated food or drinks is colorless, tasteless, and odorless, so it doesn't smell like poop unless you're smelling contaminated poop.

If the hamburger you're eating has E. coli in it, will the hamburger smell like poop? Don't think so. Our company processes thousands of pounds of cow poop into compost on a daily basis. After the pile has reached 131 degrees for at least three days the pathogens have been killed. But the pile still smells like poop.

Neither. The smell you smell is a result of the breakdown of materials in your intestine to produce gas, which doesn't smell so wonderful. For a good example, try innoculating some E. coli into an LST broth.

Nether, poop smells like nitrogenous plus other decomposing mater and E.Coli has to do with decomposition as of many bacteria but not directly related to the smell. If you drop poop in salt water the bacteria gets killed by osmotic shock but poop still smells like poop...

The distinctive odor of feces is due to bacterial action. Bacteria produce compounds such as indole, skatole, and thiols (sulfur containing compounds), as well as the inorganic gas hydrogen sulfide.
