My daughter used to trade formal dresses with her friends, changing some of the embelishments or how it was worn. Maybe you could do that on a larger scale with your school, or a sister school. Guying from a consignment shop and changing it a bit, work. You can sell some of yours there, too.
Also, I saw on a tv program where some were donated to a New Orleans school for their prom, there weren't too many dresses around after the hurricanes and it helped to return things to normal, at least for the moment.

Hopefully you bought a dress that doesn't scream "prom" and you can wear it to other occasions. I wore mine throughout college to all sorts of events, even to the theatre to see operas and plays. I wasn't overdressed at all because I was wearing it to pretty formal events.
The other alternative is to take the dress to a good tailor and have it altered so it's not formal length, but instead cocktail length. Then you can even wear it out on nice dates or to weddings and other dances.

Sell it, loan it out, give it to charity. But definitely go for the cheap ones (I was advised after-prom sales are a good way to go!). My grandma sews, so she made my formal dress (not prom 'cause i was too young last year & no upperclassman asked me :( ) & I saved quite a bit of money there.

Throw a party where girls have to wear a bridesmade dress or prom dress. Guys have to wear their ugliest suit or rent an ugly tux. Sounds like fun, I want an invite.

There is an organization that provides prom dresses for poor girls, you could donate it their.
In colorado every year they have bridesmaid dress ski jumping contest where they land in a pool of water, because "They said you could wear it again" - it's a hoot

maybe you should start with a "used" dress at a consignment shop. that way you aren't spending that much on it. lots of those clothes are still in good condition. on the other hand, if you already bought the dress, you can try to sell it on ebay.
