Going back in time to win the lottery etc would be of no use because the future from that point in time would be slightly different. This means a different set of numbers would emerge and is all down to a characteristic of the universe called 'entropy'. From any point in the past you might find that Pompey defeated Caesar, that if you killed Hitler In 1938 Germany might and probably would have won WW2, Apple computers dominated the world and Bill Gates worked in PC World as a floor walker. The book of the future is not written as some misguided people think, only the books on history are written. If it were possible I would like to go back and ask Will Shakespeare a few questions, stand on the grassy knoll with a decent cine- camera, watch Mozart conduct (and keep a close eye on Salieri), visit Bethlehem and of course Jerusalem around that time, check on the health of the dinosaurs and a few more debatable points in history.
PS I've seen the Beatles and they are definitely overrated!

Nowhere. Now, I know that's not much of an answer, but just think on it.
If you go forward in time, you'll know things before they happen. This will either cause a logical nightmare or will take all the fun out of something. Where's the sense of excitement as you win the Lotto draw or waiting to see if the latest film in the pipeline will be a hit? Can you really do anything about it?
In the past, it's been and gone. You are who you are based on what has happened in the past. You may have been in rough times, but it made you stronger. You might be able to get a bit more money or find someone, but will it have made you who you are now?
And will changing any history or future events make a difference on you now?
Nah, the best thing to do is leave well alone, in my book.

If I invented a time machine I would first off go to the future and find out how low we will have sunken by then, and after that I'd pay a visit to the past to try and make sure that we do not pollute and all that stuff. Then when im done with that ill play around with mistakes and incorrect answers. Oh yeah, and I'd also do whatever it takes to talk to the beatles. ( at least an autograph!)

When I was a student there were several occasions when I needed things that I had left at home. When I complete my Time Machine I will use it to take my Matter Transporter back to those days.

Since you posted this in the physics section, only physicists are allowed to answer.
A physicist would go back about 14 billion years (not the physicist himself, but a machine to collect data!) to find out what really happened.
Then he would go in the future 14 billion years to see what is going to happen.

"time machines" are an archaic concept.
the real time machine exists in the smallest compartments of your being's cells. the memory lives forever no matter where you go, if you can access those records then you will remember the future, the past and the present.

Well, I'd take my trusty digital camera with me and stop off in Dallas on Nov.22 1963. Then I'd go back to about 30 AD and watch J.C. perform his conjuring tricks, or not as the case may be.

I'd go back to last Saturday, buy a lottery ticket and pick the numbers that I know are going to come up. Then win 80 million dollars. Good game.

Hahaha, although its impossible....i would love 2 go 2 Pharsalus, Grecce just intime to see the culmination of Caesar's career. Its where he beat the last wolf of Rome, Gnaeus Pompey, decimating his calvary and adding Rome to his long list of conquests.

You would go into empty space and die rapidly.
The earth moves around the sun at 25km/s
The sun moves around the galaxy at 100km/s
The galaxy moves but it is hard to put a number on it.
If you go back in time the earth would be along way off.
