There are many variables like: vehicle weight(truck plus load), terrain(flat, hills, or mountains), engine rating(horsepower), transmission model and gear ratios used, average speed, speed and direction of wind, in town or out on the highway...
In general, for a truck in a long-haul application, carrying full (or near-full) loads, in the Midwest or on the East Coast, with an engine rating between 375 and 450 horsepower, you can expect between 5 and 7 miles to the (US) gallon.

Tractor trailers average between 5 to 7 mpg. There are some exceptions and engine technology is improving all the time.

It depends on which kind you are talking about. A Freightliner gets about 5 miles to the gallon. The Volvo series gets about 7-8 miles a gallon. The Western Star gets about 4-5 miles to the gallon. The others are about 5miles to the gallon. It also depends on which engine you have under the hood. A CAT engine which is made to haul heavy heavy stuff about 60,000lbs. gets about 4 mile to the gallon.
