But would I have trouble or be resented by other bikers because I don't have a Harley? I'd like to join in some runs, but some friends tell me that it would get me nothing but trouble. Is that true?

just turn up and check things out, particularly if at a diner or similar ( the runs that start at bars may not be such a good idea) if they dont look friendly you can always leave. Biggest problem is usually you didnt spend loads of money. most harleys are pretty stock (maybe a bunch of chrome bolted on) so the 650 wont have any problems keeping up as it will do over 100mph. you may get more attention than the HD though as something different always does so be prepared for crowds around your bike instead of theirs (oh, another harley...yawn)

Harley Riders are not the only bikers in the world ,I ride with guys that own every kind of Motorcycle , The sport bikes are the only ones that you will have trouble keeping up with , I would resent some one who wouldnt ride with me because Im not on a Harley , Bikers are good people in general and 90% of them wave to each other ,the other 10% are just learning how to ride so they cant take there Hand off the handlebars ..

No trouble, just not a Harley. My cousin has a Honda 1300R, and has join them on rides.

A 650 is a pretty small bike to keep up with them on a long ride, but some short runs would be just as good as any bike.

The only time that might be a problem is when the Harley guys wear jackets with gang colors. There are many clubs who only care that you have two wheels and want to have a fun day riding on them.

not true I have a ZX6 and a R1 I go on many rides that are suppose to be for "Harley's" and there are many other bikes there remember that most of these rides are for some kind of charity mostly children's problems so go on a ride you will have fun also you should take that KLR and turn it into a super moto bike them things are very fun to ride you can embarrass your friends in the twistys
