Originally, the site belonged to Echo Bay Technology Group. They tried to register the domain name EchoBay.com but found it already taken by the Echo Bay Mines, a gold mining company, so they shortened it to their second choice, eBay.com.

No its a load of individuals selling their junk on the internet ...
There are some ebay shops which is one persons / businesses items for sale but ebay itself doesn't have a shop or warehouse - its the sellers that send the goods to the successful bidder. Hope this isn't just more confusing...

no, it's not a shop. It's a catalogue that lists the stuff in other people's shops. If you're a seller, your shop is probably the messy room in your house. You don't want to invite the trogs into your house to inspect the wares, so you stick them into ebay's huge catalogue. When someone clicks to buy your stuff, they send the money TO YOU. Ebay never actually sees either the stuff or the money.
Where is it based? in various computers in dreary industrial estates around the world. Not sure how many locations - maybe a dozen places? Just a guess.
