My dad was a train driver and he said. 'They know all the things that you don't need to know to be able to drive an engine,'
ie:- driving a steam loco in fog at nighttime and knowing where you are just by the light of the fire shining on the track-side.
if this is the sort of train-spotter you mean.

Although train spotters in the UK are ridiculed, it's their hobby and they're doing no harm. This is a predominantly male pastime, usually undertaken by social inadequates who are unable to form relationships with the fairer sex.
I've worked on the railways for over twenty five years and have become something of an anorak - spotter. Only the other day at Doncaster I spotted a 1995 Marks & Spencer beige anorak with detachable hood, which I duly entered in my W H Smith lined notebook.

I have the same response as Steve S. I am a retired freight train conductor, among other things, and I'm hearing your term "train spotters" and I'm thinking of the people who you find along the tracks taking pictures of us as we go along the track beside them. If that's the case, I haven't had any trouble with them. We just wave, as do they, and they come up with some fantastic photographs that only train lovers can truly enjoy. God Bless you.

I'm not a morning person and when i had to travel on the early train ion business I couldn't get over that there was about 6 of them at the station with video cameras and everything..
How do these people get by financially???
Do the get a special type of dole that i havent been told of?? If they do i'm packin my job in, i could go and sit down at a train station and drink coffee/read the paper/smoke fags all day.. no problems

They usually lie somewhere on the autistic spectrum. I've met some lovely ones and some REALLY weird ones. Generally they're just people.
