He runs around on the carpet in the house - could this be to blame?

Yes sir it sounds like the carpet!

A carpet is not a guinea pig's natural habitat unfortunately!

Find a nice decent sized run to put in the garden. My GPs are reluctant to run or exercise but I have found that if you place one or two upturned plant pots in the middle they like to run around these like cars on a roundabout. It's amusing to watch - try it!

It could also be that where the GP has picked up pee etc from the hutch not being cleaned properly. Make sure you clean the hutch about every two days with fresh straw and saw dust.

I would recommend stripping and airing and lightly disenfecting it once a months also.

Happy GP raising!

It sounds like your guinea pig might have Bumblefoot. It is an ailment that was first identified and described in laboratory animals. While no one knows for sure, it can be related to the cage flooring (wire mesh) or a fungal infestation. Others think it is more of an inflammatory reaction to an allergy or injury. There are reports of successfully treating this condition with Griseofulvin. What you can do right now is make sure the cage is clean. Sterilize the flooring with a bleach bath. (1 cup bleach to 1 gallon water. Let the flooring soak in the bath for overnight. In the morning rinse the flooring with water. Allow it to air dry. This drying will also kill any spores.) Use only "GUINEA PIG" litter that is formulated to be mild. Keep your pig's feet clean with a regular washing using a saline solution (contact lense cleaner). Make sure to dry them with a soft cloth. The condition isn't fatal but can be painful.

It sounds like he is walking on surfaces that aren't good for his feet. Are you sure carpet is the only thing he is walking on because that should be fine. Try confining him to a cage (without metal on the bottom) with a lot of bedding until the feet are healed. Then, only allow him in small areas around the house until you pinpoint the problem. Then you will know what to keep him from.

Also, take him to the vet. He could be having an allergic reaction, maybe to the carpet cleaner or something.

The carpet could be to blame or it could also be from him chewing on his feet cuz his toe nails are too long. If its not that maybe it's from being in his feces or some type of chemical. Keep him nice and clean, it should do the trick.
