The Queen plays an inportant part in today's Governmental admin. For example the PM must request her permission to become Prime Minister and also she opens Parliamentary sessions. Technically she can refuse someone rom being Prime Minister although there has never been an instance where this has been done.
Similarily all new statutes in law must be signed by her- in an emergency such as war the PM and Queen can fast track a bill- the NNorthern Ireland Act was passed in a day. The Queen is also the only person who can officially declare a state of war, and it is also the Queen who heads any millitary committees and deployment.
Really the Queen's major role is to head the Government and act where there is a risk of a fascist/corrupt actions by the Government.
Also, the Royal palaces and the Royal name make millions in tourism revenue for the country. Memrobilia is incredibly popular in the US and in Africa. The Queen and Elvis Preseley are the only two people to be recognised world-wide, even in remote and isolated places!
Personally I believe the Royals are a symbol of what this country is, and of the hundreds of years of tradition and history the country has. This is what often captivates 'young nations' such as the US who don't have the thousands of years of history we are lucky to have in the UK.

The only role they play is detrimental to the British tax payer. Millions are used annually to support the monarchy. This money could be spent in many different ways to help the British inner structure. I realize it's tradition but the royal family has outlived it's usefulness and should be disband. The fact that the Windsor contributes little if anything to society is well documented should be proof enough. They should work like everyone else.

I believe they do wonders for the British Economy, as so many people from abroad think they are wonderful and come to London to see if they can spot the Queen, or look around Windsor Castle or Buckingham Palace, etc.

Aside from being a glorified tourist attraction, I am not entirely sure. I think some of the individuals in the Royal Family command a lot of respect, some are just plain embarrassing, and some are very over rated. I won't name names but I am sure everyone has these opinions on some of them!

as a staunch anti royalist - they play no part in todays world. The arguement is always "but they bring in the tourists" - er how? The tide of americans and japanese come for the whole hop on a red bus, take photos of the buildings, wear the union jack hat with a pigeon on your arm stuff which doesnt generally involve Lizzy at any point unless she's maybe taking the photo! I could rant for England on this subject - my fave royal moment was when the queen mum was airlifted from Balmoral when she got a fish bone stuck in her throat - fab moment, it was around the time that a commoner (you and me to Lizzy and her crew) died after spending 27 hours on a trolley in A&E - she was about the same age as the queen mum - just not 'royal' - just not entitled to the same 5 * medical treatment. I really wish space would allow me to elaborate on the pathetic cult of the 'peoples princess' who had she lived would had done a fergie sooner or later and disappeared to America to lunch for charity ad nauseum or the ongoing 'anguish' of her two sons charlie jr & harry (hewitt) - losing a loved one is terrible but more so because you're royal? For real anguish try the parents of the Soham victims who suffered more at the hands of the press than the windsor boys and their lawyers ever will!
Oh...what's noise...uhh...its the sound of a 63 yr old Berkshire resident putting pen to paper to call me a 'disgrace' - whatever

certainly not an important role. They're a tourist attraction, i feel a bit sorry for them actually (even if they are rich), especially the younger ones. everything they do or say gets in the papers
