Prior to purchasing a new system, I'd contact Compaq first to make sure the laptop is still under warranty. If it is, let them know what issues you are having with the system. If the laptop has CD burning capability (as most do these days), I suggest purchasing some read/writeable CDs (I use HP) and put all of your school information on those -- ASAP (if you haven't done so already). I know how you are feeling. I had all of my undergraduate work on my desktop and it started misbehaving -- Win98, had it since 1999 so I knew it was time for a new one.
What computer is best for you primarily depends on what you will be doing with the computer. If most of your graduate work is going to be comprised of writing papers and will not contain large pictures and graphs, you could get away with something that has a large harddrive, at least 60 GB and at least 256 memory. Since HP and Compaq have merged and if you want to stick with them, they are good computers. I purchased a Toshiba Satellite and am very satisfied. Two weeks after I had it the network card died and Toshiba replaced the entire Motherboard.
I start graduate classes this coming Wednesday -- Master's in Criminal Justice.

I believe an Apple is your best bet. With the new laptops you can even use Windows if you find out you need a specific program that doesn't have a Mac version

It sounds like you might just need to reload the software on your computer to solve you problems. Windows is known to get corrupted over time.
