General X has got it backwards. It is because we are hard working Americans. We know how to put in a real days work and what it takes to keep America strong. Unlike those lazy French people who whine if they don't get at least 12 wks. vacation time from the get go, and then need the U.S.A. to bail them out if anyone starts pushing them around on the playground!

the United States gets the least amount of vacation days -- 12, and ties with
Canada on giving the most days back. On the other side of the coin, the
average French worker receives about 39 vacation days per year, returns only 1
on average, and nearly half of the French workforce takes at least one 3 to 4
week vacation at some point each year. In Great Britain, 25% of workers say
they've taken a 'sickie' because they couldn't face going to work. And of the
U.S. respondents who took advantage of their vacation days, 37% said they
returned to work feeling refreshed and more productive.

Supply and demand unmitigated by governmental forces. Some Americans take more time not less. Still, it is interesting to read both intergenerational and cross border work patterns.

It is purely a supply and demand question, not anything else. Americans are paid to have their time demanded of them by others.

Americans over work so they can avoid their home situations, like how a vacation would involve spending time with your family, and so many people have disfunctional families because they don't spend time together (but no one wants to take the time to fix it.) It's a cycle.

Because we're lazy bastards and are too lazy to even take a vacation. Basically we do all our vacationing on our couches while our slaves go and buy more chips and cable tv for us.
