There was a lot of excellent advice on this website- you especially want to get the car wet before you start washing to avoid scratching the finish. I live in the Rocky Mountains and it's true that regularly washing your car will prevent rot, rust and other problems but you also need to clean the under body - which isn't possible unless you go to a commercial car wash. You can pay for an under body coat on newer cars but I'm not sure about older ones.

I prefer to use a brush connected to a hose, with water running through it to wash away the dirt and grit. Using clothes/sponges only on subborn marks.
Use a good quality wax when dry, dont rely on the wash and wax shampoo's.

here's how I do it:

...and that's it. Works a treat. I never ever damage the wax layer by applying too much hot water or soap.
