I started programming with PHP/MySQL about a year ago. I had no prior programming experience so I bout a few books on PHP. Don't give up! I read the books for months and all of a sudden it clicked. It is difficult but stick with it.

PHP is actually a great LEARNING language. So, instead of learning another language to learn PHP, learn PHP to learn other languages! PHP is very forgiving and fairly good at giving you instant feedback on where precisely your errors are.

Luke Welling and Laura Thomson gave a master class at the PHP Conference a few years back promoting using PHP to teach introductory computing. One of their books can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0672317842/104-7937509-6887906?v=glance&n=283155
