Doesn't that seem odd? The budgets for arts and music programs are the first to get cut.

Let me tell you why.

The reason is that things like art, music, maners, and etiquette can NOT be tested on a standardized exam.

Now just let this thought settle in your head and think about the possible causes/implications.

The schools are usually judged based on their children's performance which is calculated from a standardized tests. Why do you think things like manners are not taught in school today? Because they can't be tested so why should schools waste time and money on something which will not SHOW a benefit to school.

And sports. Venerate is too strong of a word. We admire actors and musicians, yet most go out of fashion within several years. Replaced by new ones. The problem with the budget are teacher's exorbitant salaries and the school districts overspending on programs that could be consolidated with neighboring school districts. School district financial management is shocking. And it ends up hurting the students who look for activites after school. The finger pointing should be aimed at teacher's unions.

There is very little learning going on in school. Just lots and lots of memorizing. Osho said something like that, and he's right. What did I learn in school that's memorable or useful? Lefty-loosey, righty-tighty! That's it.

My point of course being that with the arts, at least actual learning can take place.

I really don't have a strong opinion on this; I was simply drawn in by your avatar. I worship at the altar of Kawasaki!

because they need to concentrate on more important things like, math, history, science and civics. Not music and art. Lets stop placing rock stars and actors on a pedestal and start studying what's really important. Most kids today know more about Brittany Spears and Kid Rock than George Washington and Thomas Jefferson - all they know about them is they "owned slaves". Most people today are so uninformed they think the civil was was fought over slavery.

oh, it wasn't - slavery was made an issue by the northern aggressors.

School districts exist to teach kids academic subjects. It should be up to parents to pay if they want their "darling" to be a world renowned pianist. You are partially right - sports should get cut before the arts.

I qualified in industrial arts (graphic design) more than twenty years ago and have never used my qualifications. Does that answer your question?
