I liked the Yucatan Peninsula, but I don't remember it that well- I was a kid when I went there. I DID NOT like Cancun, though. I would not recommend it in the least. I went there over spring break and was treated like crap by the locals. Way too much machisimo for me. Worst vacation spot that I have ever been to.

Just back from trip to Playa del Carmen, which is south of Cancun and on coast across from Cozumel. I would REALLY recommend "Playa" over Cancun or Cozumel. Cancun is very Americanized. Cozumel is more limited in terms of activities, but is great for snorkling or scuba diving.
Playa is the current hot spot on the Yucatan. When we were there in early July, the crowd was 1/3 US citizens, 1/3 rich Mexican nationals, and 1/3 europeans. There are a variety of accommodations, from the luxurious all-inclusive resorts (just south of Playa at Playacar) to the boutique "european" hotels that are cheap and simple. (Better check with the bride on her requirements.) Great and cheap restaurants and bars throughout the city.
Though families are present (particularly at resorts), the place exudes sexy. Beautiful people in skimpy clothes. Awesome beaches.
Playa is also more centrally located on the coast. That makes it easy to take day trips to Cozumel or Tulum ruins or other activities.
Enough English is spoken to make it easy to order food or shop. But, the city is not so overrun that spanish isn't prevelent.
Tips: (1) don't drink the tap water and use use bottled water even when brushing teeth, (2) ice machines (for margaritas) are usually filtered and not a problem, (3) be leery of salads because washing might have been done with tap water, and (4) everyone flies into Cancun, when traveling to the Yucatan. Getting to anywhere else requires shuttles or buses or (if you want to spend more money) taxis. Have a great trip.

This past June, my husband and I went to Cancun, and stayed at the Blue Bay Getaway, now I know that it's a party place, but it can also be very romantic too..... we enjoyed sipping pina coladas in the Quiet Pool!
We took the ferry to Isla Mujeres, rented a golf cart, drove all over the island, and went swimming at Playa Norte, the most beautiful beach we've ever been to!
We had a wonderful time, I can definitely recommend Blue Bay Getaway and Cancun for a lovely, romantic trip!
Enjoy!

I u go to Cozemel u can go parasailing for very cheep and the water is extrodinalily clear. The reefs are spectactular. Costa Maya is where u should go if u want some history becuase thats where the mayan ruins are. Tip-dont go to Maya if its hot out!!

If you're looking for culture - try staying on Isla Mujerues - it's a small island about 8 miles off of Cancun. Life is slow and relaxed. We stayed at the Avalon Reef - it was wonderful - right on the water on a little itty bitty island of its own! If you're looking for night life - Cancun is just a ferry ride away. There are tons of tours in the are - maya ruins an EcoPark/water Park. It's beautiful!

I have. I have lived in Cancun and have family in Merida. You will not be dissapointed...
*The food in Valladolid is great
*Do not go to Chetumal, is awful and there´s nothing to do (nothing you would care for anyway)
*Chichen Itza is a powerful place, make sure you have good snickers for semi-long walking distances. Food is so-so but edible.
*The Mayan Riviera: Akumal, Tankah, Acanceh, Tulum, all incredible, wonderful beaches that makes your faith in God stronger.
*Canadian dollars welcome, but locals are more used to USdollars.
*Merida is beautiful and have all amenities you could think of.
*Few words and phrases in Spanish will make a lot of difference because not everybody speaks English or French, here are some:
1. Thank you = Gracias
2. Por favor = Please
3. ¿Donde esta la parada del camion? = Where is the bus stop?
4. Por favor dígame el mejor club de la ciudad/pueblo = Please tell me which is the best club in the city/town.
4. Quiero una cerveza = I want a beer please
5. Area de no fumar = Non smoking area
Or if you can get those quick english/spanish dictionaries your golden...Hope this is helpful...Welcome to Mexico!!!

Cancun and Cozumel are very Americanised, you should check out Belize, more history, the official language is English since it was British Honduras, and has the worlds 2nd largest coral reef of it's coast ... Still has Mayan Ruins, miles of sandy beaches, rainforests ..etc ... but more exotic. Check out the Journey's End Hotel in San Pedro Belize.
