Uh... Definately Bob Dylan... He may not admit it (or seem to like it much) but he certainly defined a generation, and on top of that wrote some of the most amazing poetry of the 20th Century...

Furthermore, just about everyone from the Beatles to the Clash cite him as an influence on their music.

These are all good answers (i don't know about the legendary status of GG Allin but hey. . . to each their own) . . . my 2 cents is Paul Simon a great songwriter with major hits from the 50's (hey schoolgirl & red rubber ball) throughout the 60's & 70's and re-emerging in a big way in the 80's with Graceland (you can call me al) and still working it, with a good album in 2006!

Robert Johnson. Without him, a lot would not have been possible, including Elvis.

Jerry Garcia. Lead singer of the Grateful Dead. Died in the summer of '96 (I think). Grateful Dead had a HUGE following of fans called "Deadheads"...my ex-husband (now dead, no pun intented) was one of them and insisted on our daughter's middle name being Althea which was the name of a Grateful Dead song. I went to lots of shows with him and some Jerry Garcia Band shows as well and surprisingly like the latter better.

John Lennon....hands down!!!! If you want to ask.."what was the greatest rock group ever" It's The Beatles. Music wouldn't be what it is today, if it weren't for The Beatles.
