Details weren't given, but pre-1986 Superman (upon whom all the Superman movies have been based) could survive in space (basically he didn't need oxygen, or food for that matter). We don't know that the movie Superman loses his powers under a red sun, but he did come back to earth in that crystal-like spacecraft, so maybe he traveled there an back in that (having gotten the spacecraft from the Fortress.

What makes you think that Superman needs oxygen to survive? He is from another planet entirely and we have no idea what the atmospheric make-up of that planet is if there even is one.
To answer your second question: in space there is nothing to stop his momentum so there would be no need for a yellow sun since he is not technically flying. If he can fly in the direction of Krypton then his momentum would take him there.
As a side note I think that it is funny how these are the questions posed, but the question of "How does a change in the color of the sun give a being powers?" is totally accepted.

Superman used a space ship. And to answer the question of another person, the difference in the color or light emitted by the sun is also supposed to indicate invisible radiations or particles that it emits, too. Kryptonians are supposed to be able to metabolize these ultra solar rays better then we do. We get tanned; their skin toughens to become invulnerable. We generate Vitamin D in our skin from sunlight, their muscles become far more efficient.
There are other differences. It had been strongly hinted that Kryptonians did not originate there, but that their ancestors crashed there. thus, they hd the human form but now had to grow and live in a gravity field far greater than the planet they came from. The mutated the mental power of levitation or antigravity (telkinesis) so that they could get around without having to crawl everywhere on their hands and knees.
Once removed from the large gravity field of Krypton, Kryptonians can entirely defy the gravity of small planets like Earth. It is not emphasized, but Superman's TK also assists his strength. He can lift an ocean liner by one end without being overbalanced, or lift it in the middle without it splitting in half due to its own weight.
The senses work in other ways, I will not go into those here.
Other parts of his powers are due to the fact that Kryptonian tissues and biosystems are more efficient. A good deep lungful of air will last Superman for hours and hours. His oxygen use is minimal, compared to ours.

In the beggining of the movie you see a giant Crystal structure come crashing down to the earth near his foster parents. Later in the movie he talks of how he managed to reconstruct a krypton shuttle using the crystals in his fortress of solitude but there was nothing there so he ending up coming back to earth and crashing.

For what I remember the RED SUN of Kripton become a SUPER NOVA, so there is no sun.
And for what the comics say, Superman is like a Duracell battery, he acumulates the yellow sun energy and it drops really slowwwww.
