I've been searching for playstation 1 games for my kids and have noticed a lot of them claim to work in PS1 and PS2. I'm curious to know if I can buy PS2 games and if they'll work in my PS1?

No they won't, while the PS2 is backwards compatible and can play PS1 games, PS2 games can not be played on the PS1.

they wouldn't be makin playstation 2's if the games worked in a Playstation 1 (buy a playstation 3, it plays ps2, ps1 and ps3 games) three times the pleasure
