A War!
Seriously though, Hezbollah kidnapped 2 Israeli soldiers. Israel retaliated. Thus it has been for 10 days now. There is no end in sight because Hezbollah wants nothing less than totals destruction of Israel. Israel basically does not take crap from anyone. If you attack them they will make you pay a harsh penalty.
Mordent: Some western countries? Although there may be differing opinions about what Israel is doing and the harshness of it's response, I think all western countries agree including the UN, that Hezbollah is a terrorist organization. If you question this you can check UN resolution 1559 from form 2000 demanding that Hezbollah disarm and withdraw from southern Lebanon. A resolution which has been ignored I might add.
Fadia: Trust me I have seen your other answers, and your constant justification for the actions of terrorists while condemning Israel leaves me feeling unsettled at best.
Specifically relating to things you have posted about Lebanon. You speak of previous occupation by Israel, but you fail to mention that Israel withdrew it's forces under UN resolution 1559 in 2000. Part of that agreement was that Lebanon would disarm Hezbollah. Instead Lebanon did nothing and allowed Hiezbollah to strenghten it's position. You also fail to ever mention that Israel made no additional forays into Lebanon until their sovreignty was invaded by Hezbollah thus igniting a new conflict. While I hate the idea that innocents die, this is unfortunately what happens in war. Lebanon is not completely innocent here because if they had honored their pledge to disarm the terrorists we might not be having this discussion today.

OK, so they all made sure they covered the essential, why something is going on in Lebanon, but no one told you what is going on in Lebanon. A human tragedy and a likely to happen bloodbath is what's going on, a war of a dimension and speed rarely reached before and totally out of proportion with its "cause," the demolition of a civilian infrastructure of a whole country, food and medical supplies attrition, no power, a blockade, and a half a million refugees, three hundred and fifty civilian deaths, and only about twenty Hezbollah "terrorists" hit. The focus on why or how it started is the average American doing his unwitting best to serve Israel, justifying them, without even a second of awareness in what he/she are doing? Seriously, why the defensiveness? Why did nobody say what is going on IN Lebanon? That was the question, after all...
If you care, if you don't mind, look up my answers to anything related to Israel, Hezbollah, the Arabs, Lebanon, and Hariri. I'm so sick and tired of reiterating it. It feels so hopeless. I'll pass on the ten points I got on the other answers on this topic.
Sorry Mordent, hadn't seen your post when I submitted mine. Thank you for the fairness and congrats on your originality.

Hezbollah, a group which Israel and SOME western countries say is a terrorist group, and which is particularly strong in Lebanon, Syria and Iran (it forms part of the Lebanese government) kidnapped some Israeli soldiers. Israel retaliated by bombing Hezbollah's heartland in southern Lebanon. Lebanon retaliated by launching katyusha rockets at Haifa, Israel's third largest city.
Israel has continued bombing Lebanon, destroying roads, bridges, power stations, Beirut airport, and has warned anyone living in south Lebanon to flee. Israel has also imposed a naval blocade, and has only recently let in international aid, after relenting to international preassure.
Israel appears to be preparing for an invasion, after having called up reservists, and increasing numbers of troops on the border.
The "international community" has been critical of Israel, but to differing degrees. France has called for an immediate cease-fire, Russia has said Israel is being much too harsh, the US has been critical of Israel, but hasn't called for an end to the violence.
Hizbollah appears to be largely unharmed by the attacks, a heavy bombing raid on what Israel believed to be their headquarters had little effect, and Hizbollah refuses to release their hostages, unless Israel releases prisoners in return.
The last time I heard Israel's casualties were 34, Lebanon's 344, though it rises all the time.
Stop the war people.

This war has been a long time coming. There has been tension between Hizbulla and Israel for a long time. The Lebanese government does not support, and is unable to control Hizbulla, so when they crossed the border and kidnapped two Israeli soldiers and shelled Israeli towns, Israel could no longer be passive and restrict herself. Hizbulla refuses to accept the right Israel has to exist and is committed to its destruction. Israel is doing what any country has the responsibility to do - protect its citizens by destroying the terrorists. Unfortunatly many Lebanese civillians are getting killed, due to the cowardace of Hizbulla. These cowards hide in the cities next to school, hospitals and housing to protect themselves, and make Israel look like a tyrant at the same time. Hizbulla clearly has no love for their Lebanese brothers and sisters, or they would not involve them in their disgusting war.

The first point to bear in mind is that the crisis did not truly
begin with the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah. The
kidnappings presented a serious problem for Israel, but could not, by themselves, define the geopolitical issue. That definition came when Hezbollah rockets struck Haifa, Israel's third-largest city, on July 13. There were also claims coming from Hezbollah, and confirmed by Israeli officials, that Hezbollah had missiles available that could reach Tel Aviv. Israel's population is concentrated in the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem corridor and in the Tel Aviv-Haifa corridor. In effect, Hezbollah had attained the ability to strike at the Israeli heartland. Hezbollah has been hitting the northern part of this heartland, as well as pounding Israel's northern frontier.
Formerly, Syria had troops in Lebanon. When Syria withdrew its troops Hezbollah could operate freely.
Hezbollah are Shiite Muslims as are most Lebanese, Syrians, Iraqis, Iranians and some Yemenis, Pakistanis and Bahrainians. Diplomatic efforts are aimed at getting the Sunni Muslim countries to negotiate. This includes Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
Israel has sent special forces troops into Lebanon to ferret out strongholds and weapons. Many of these are located in tunnels. Israel may send tanks. On Beirut Al-Manar TV Lebanese President Emile Lahhud expressed his support for Hezbollah leader, Al-Sayyid [Hasan] Nasrallah. It seems likely that the Lebanese will commit their army to assist Hezbollah against Israel.
Hezbollah has indicated that it will bombard Tel-Aviv, Israel with 500 missiles. So far, Hezbollah has used Kassam and Ketuysha rockets. It has not used the Zelzal or Fajr missiles, yet which have longer range. Israel is committed to ferreting out the missiles and destroying them. This will be costly to both sides in casualties.
It seems that Hezbollah wants to maximize civilian casualties on both sides. Hezbollah deliberately operates military wings out of densely populated areas. In addition, Israeli civilian casualties are maximized when Hezbollah launches antipersonnel missiles designed by Syria and Iran with ball-bearing shrapnel.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has said on MEMRI TV the volcano of rage of the people in the region is on the brink of eruption...it will not be limited to this region
Beginning early this morning, July 21st 2006, IDF ground forces are operating in the area of the Karni crossing in the northern Gaza Strip. In a military engagement just over the border of Lebanon Israeli soldiers of the Egoz regiment discovered one of the many fortified bunkers holding the large arsenal of missiles currently raining upon Israeli towns in the North. The United Nations has called for a ceasefire and wishes to oversee
the peace.

Hezbollah fighters crossed the border into Israel and kidnapped Israeli soldiers. Hezbollah is a nationall known terrorist organization that refuses Israel's right to exist. The Lebanese government gives Hezbollah free reign of the south and refuses to control them. Israel acted in response by attempting to destroy Hezbollah to the extent it can. Hezbollah continued firing rockets into northern Israel, so Israel fought harder to destroy Hezbollah's arsenal. Iran thinks Hezbollah is the best thing since sliced bread and is making statements in its support. Any questions?

Its quite simple!
Lebanon and Israel had problems with muslemic extremists calling themself "Hezbollah".
This group kept bugging Israel with attacks and took hostages while hiding on Lebanon territory.
Israel finally lost its patience and started to take them out.
