In the few actual studies I've come across, neither is very effective, but one works as well as the other. Close friends who have a strong marriage and who have been together for at least 4 years are a far better source of help than either counseling or religion.

Well that depends on the role that religion is taking in your marriage. (for some marriages with different religions it's a divisive factor).
My husband and I pray together every day, and that's something that really helps keep us close together and helps us to focus on the big picture when things in our marriage get not-so-peachy. Also, many congregation leaders (pastors, bishops, rabbis, whatnot) are frequently trained to some degree or another in marriage counseling, and can give the much needed perspective of someone who shares your beliefs.
All in all, I wouldn't use religion as a replacement of counseling, but as a really good supliment to go with counseling.
Best wishes.

Religion is better than counseling but it is not the perfect solution. People mess things up by the choices they make every day so if you run to religion to help save your relatioship amnd it does nto work it is not the religions fault. So many people blame counselors for failurs The counselor only is there to make educated options to you, it is up to you to act on them, same with religion. Go ahead and find religion it never did naybody wrong but if things don't work out remeber it was choices you ar him made.

All religion does is keep you both centrally focused on your faith. God isn't going to drop out of the sky and tell you what to do.
Profesisonal therapy is effective only when both parties are willing participants, but it does work...give it time. changes do not happen overnight.
Good Luck to you.
