And if it is - is that power being abused?

Not anymore. When was the last time you read the newspaper? The internet and blogs or sites like this are fast replacing the media. It is one persons view of what is going on and it is influenced by who owns the press, who is the editor, and what news sells on any given day. The newspaper is slowly being replaced by the internet. Do you consider yourself the media? If you read this are you your own editor in chief? Of course you are and it may be a good thing since it is the people's ideas and not those of the politicians that are being sent around the world. Answers and questions posed by people like you are having a direct affect on everyone with a computer and a willingness to know what other people think right now, not at 5 o'clock tomorrow morning when the papers hit the street, so the media has had its day. The internet blogs, forums and chat lines are the new communication systems of tomorrow beginning today.

Americans watch more TV than they spent time with family. So yes it is, by far, the most powerful force.
The amount of censorship in the US media is comparable to the ones in authoritarian countries. Only in those countries the censorship is imposed be the government and in the US it is imposed by the corporation who owns the media which has an "invested interest" in what people here and see.
Another sad part is that in authoritarian countries people KNOW the news is slanted and they look for outside sources to complement their information. In the US the average person thinks what on CNN is the entire news and does not seek other venues, so they never get the whole news that the rest of the world does.

The answer to both parts of your question is YES.

President Teddy Roosevelt called the Media "Yellow Journalism." Media has not change in these hundred years and more since T. Roosevelt's time.

Media has too much control on how the average American Citizen thinks. It is powered by those "The Powers That Be" and cannot report unbiasedly or truthfully without impunity. TPTB will shut down any Media that will unbiasedly and truthfully report major news items.

They also have selected omission leaving out news that doesn't fit their agenda, or TPTB agenda.

No, the media only provide for audiences that are their target.
A classic example, if you buy the Star newspaper, you will read lots of things about Big Brother, but very little about the situation in the Lebanon.
The target of the Sport is that of people who have 'little or no interest in world affairs'
This means that within this target group The Sport may have some influence, but that target group is only one of many.
The nice thing about free press and media is that its diverse across the whole spectrum.
You may feel that the media is in control, but that is only in the group in which you exist.
Dont worry, as long as we have boobs on page 3, those that have an opinion, but dont have a clue wont be making any decisions.

Media is what we have made it , a monster . We all crave news, good or bad , and we can now get it 24/7.
There are a lot of people out there who unfortunately cannot think for themselves & the media exploit this fact .
It leads to people believing all that thay read or are told. I think this is an abuse of power because they are telling you what they think you should know .

I think so, and they use it to persuade us to do the things they need... Watch their programmes, buy their stuff.... they are always trying to make us do sth we don't want to....

I don't know if they are abusive, because its also our fault... we let ourselves convince by them.... In abusion we have two parts:
a) the one that is being abusive
b) the one that lets them abuse he/she

The bad thing of the media is like, for example, they show us the top models and there are some people that want to be like them, and are several with many problems like bulimia anorexia... etc...
