particularly if it's in the news (murders, police chases, etc.). Is it because nothing exciting ever goes on here like in California?

First of all, I believe that most people do not get excited when major crime hits our city. You might find a few who find it exciting but that must be due to their boring life. BTW, doesn't Cali have daily police chases?

Why would we be happy? We're going to giggle if we see a girl getting raped? We're going to smile when our mom's house getting robbed right in front of our eyes? We're going to laugh when if we see our kids getting killed?
