why do people keep thinking its a new game in the USA?

football has been in the USA since the 1870's and just never gotten anybetter, allot of american would say its because of american football but american football came from a mixture of football (soccer) and Rugby and a man by the name of Mr. Brown came up with the name soccer.. look at africa football hasnt been played their till the 1930's and 40's the english soldiers tought them the game football and look at were africa is now they are playing great football they are just missing the money to develope better footballers.

SHAREEN look at baseball its full of players from cuba, porto rico and other contries and the USA is not the best at baseball anymore.

i know football (soccer) is the fastest growing sport in USA know, but in the news and magazines they keep saying its a new sport in USA but its been around for a very long time. look at baseball and basketball its new to other countries and usa loses to japan in WBC and the dream team usa for basketball lost in the olympics and the teams that beat them are new to the sport compared to USA beeing new to football (soccer)

people think its new in the united states because they are just ridiculously ignorant. the united states will never improve in football because they know that no matter how good they get, they can never beat teams like brasil, germany, france, italy...among others.

basically, rather than trying to improve, they would rather focus on sports where they know they are number 1 (because no other country participates!) like american football and baseball. they would rather be number 1 competing against no one than be among the worst in a sport that the entire world loves.

Listen here its new here IT IS cause 1 numba NOBODY in america EVER cares 4 football (soccer) cause its not a american sport dats why most ppl don't like it much americans r to show off if they tryed to understand the game they would actually like it some like it an most don't thats the way it is in American i'm in american so don't even ask " have u ever been" well i lived there 4 2 years an its been pure hell. What's your point? Look at soccer--the English as well as the Scots invented it and neither are any good at it any more. I'd hold off on dissing the USA baseball team as they did not take the first World Baseball Classic seriously. Similar to that Land of Eng and early World Cups and not joining FIFA.

Anyhoo, Third World nations can get good at soccer because that's the ONLY sport really they have.

To claim the USA has never gotten any better is just inaccurate. Considering, at best, the maybe 5th or 6th best American athletes play the sport, I'd say beating Land of Eng 1-0 in 1950 and making the QF in WC '02 is not bad at all.

Tell me, how do Land of Eng's 5th or 6th best athletes do at baseball? Basketball? Lacrosse even? Lawn darts?

To Percy R. When I read your post I started to laugh and was surprised that someone with you limited knowledge would even post on this subject.

I'm not attcking your opinion. I'm just going to point out that most of the other crap you wrote is wrong. I don't know if your a soccer fan or not but here it comes.

The USA made it to the quarter finals of the World Cup in 2002.

Keller play in one of the top leagues in the World. He has consistently played well there and starts for his team. He was also rated one of the top goalies in that league for several seasons.

One point I can make about the topic is most games haven't been shown on TV until recently(past 10 years). This was actually the first World Cup in which ESPN / ABC showed every game live.

Where are you getting that Americans think world football is a "new" game? Do you know how many kids play it in this country?

Now, I can understand it if Americans didn't realize how exciting soccer is, or think that the rules are new somehow, but not that it's actually an entirely new game. Who are you talking to, and what sports pages are you reading?

I knew all that, yea is not new in the states , it's not really popular , the traditional games of our country are baseball, football and basketball, so football (soccer) is left out, let's face it until we make it to the quarter of the finals in any world cup no one will take it seriously. When your team's best player is a "john doe" who's last name is "Donovan" and your goalie is "Keller" a second rate pro player your team as much courage it might have is doomed against mostly every team.

You'd be suprised how popular it is. Its more popular than American Football (not soccer) in the youth. I think one reason is because the media doesn't like because there is no ad space during the game. And I hear a lot at high school: the jocks condem it, they think its a pansy sport, but if you've ever played it its not. You have to be in the best shape to play, better shape than American football, better than baseball, better than any other sport.
