Its an old wives tale that Goldfish have a 3 second memory span. They learn things such as to expect food when the pump is switched off, I switch my pump off twice a day and they all swim straight to the top at the exact spot the food goes in. If they did have a 3 second memory span then they`d spend all their lives thinking "I`ve forgotten!! What have I forgotten?? I`ve forgotten!! What have I forgotten?? I`ve forgotten!!"

If you have bought a fancy fish, such as a Fantail, or an Oranda, Then they will be just fine on their own. Although I believe that any non predatory fish are better off in 2`s or 3`s.

If you have Piranah, then its best to get 6 or 7, and make sure you keep them well fed or they may turn on each other.

Depends what kind of fish it is. It's nice to have some friends. But, if it is say a fighter fish (beta) then it cant survive with another fish. They will fight to death. If the fish is ok with living with others, then I say go buy some more. You don't want your fish to be lonely!

if it is a schooling fish you should keep it in groups of 6 or 7. Examples of those type of fish are tetras and some catfish like the cory. Goldfish do well alone or with others.

I think it really depends on the type of fish. I have swordtails and they don't like to be alone.
