Brothers. It's very basic and runs great. I've sewed for years and years on various machines, Singer, and other brands. Brothers is inexpensive and very simple to operate.

I like my White Jeans Machine. It's held up very well with the only problems being user error. I use to have a Sears Kenmore pretty basic machine that lasted for about 40 years. Theres no need to spend a lot of money for all the extra electronic stuff until you know you're going to do more than basic sewing. Even then, some pretty fancy things can be made on the simplest of machines.

I agree with Mandalawind that you should go to a sewing machine/vacuum repair place and see what kind of used machines they have. Generally older machines are much more sturdy than the inexpensive newer models. I have a 40+ year-old Singer Touch & Sew 600 and it just goes and goes and goes. All I ever have to do is give it a couple drops of oil and brush the lint out.

Go to Sears! Honestly, they have all the major brands at all price ranges and there's a good selection of easy-to-use ones for beginners @ about $100-.

Go to a sewing/vacuum business and pick up a used Bernina, any model. I've done this twice and have been thrilled with both purchases.
