I'm not just talking about over-population. I'm talking about war, famine, disease, and the abundance of kids who already need homes and parents and don't have them. What's the impetus for bringing more kids into the world, and neglecting those that already need help?
In some developing countries, contraception is hard to come by and it's hard to tell people who have nothing not to seek refuge in a natural pleasure that they don't have to buy. Fair enough.
Maybe China has the right idea. Their "One Child" policy at least addresses the issue at some level.
Sure, I'm an idealist. But why isn't adoption a more popular option?

Generally when people fall in love, get married, are contemplating children, they are not taking into consideration any overarching social dilemma like overpopulation. Reproduction is primal and ultimately selfish. With the exception of a few socially conscious people, most would like to have offspring of their own to carry on their family line and traits.
When’s the last time you heard a newly wed couple say we will refrain from having kids because of the overpopulation problem.

I don't think there is an overpopulation problem, there is just a problem of human beings being extremely inhumane to one another. I often think the word "humane" is an oxymoron, because people are the worst example of humane creatures.
most people bring kids into the world because they want kids of their own. A long time ago, I had a revelation that women are trained to enjoy playing with dolls, and that they never really change; there dollhouses just get a lot bigger and their non-living childhood dolls turn into living children in adulthood. Women still try to control every little detail of their little "doll's" existence, and never really regard other animals or people as equals.
This isn't to diss women, men are trained, too. They never really regard other animals or peoples as equals either, making it much easier for them to go around killing everything they see.
I guess as long as people have a childish understanding of the world they live in, they will continue to bring more children into the world than the world can support and care for.

well in this great state of Maine *laughs* Most people have children just to suck off of the state and other people's paychecks! There's this one chick i saw in walmart who had a child (the girl must have been no older than 16) and she was buying herself clothes, make-up, jewerly, etc. I looked at her and said "i don't think that little baby needs that stuff. It looks like it needs a bath and some diapers and new clothes." Needless to say she ran out of the store crying and she left all of her junk. That kind of sh*t really disgusts me. I work my a*s off and ppl are sitting on their fat a*ses and get half of the money I worked for!

And specific, the best is often nicely worth it.

China's "one child" policy has caused millions of baby girls to be discarded! People feel they need to pass on their own name/genes whatever. That isn't wrong.
