A redneck is so called from the sunburn they get from working outside in the sun. They are usually found in the rual south around farms and ranches and racecar tracks, but the term has come to mean people with the same conservative, down-home values and tastes as the rual variety who have moved into towns and cities.

A hillbilly is a person born and raised in the Appalachian Mountains, and has some of the characteristics of a redneck, but has a more isolated culture, is more family and clan oriented. Poorer, too.

A hick is any rual person who lacks insight into city ways, or into the slickness of con artists, and who is likely to be suspicious or skeptical of change or innovation.

A bumpkin is an oldfashioned word that means much the same as hick.

None of these terms is very polite, and they are all stereotypical.

back in the day, a redneck was someone with short hair, and they got a sunburn on their neck, liked merle haggerd and hated hippies. a hillbilly is a 2nd cousin to a redneck, usually people who didnt get away from the farm much and wore bib overalls. a hick is a 3rd cousin removed, also a country person and usually considered stupid. a bumpkin, once again is a country person. i think they are a composite of the other 3.

Oh, my gosh, I cHick (also country hick or country bumpkin) is a derogatory term for a person from a rural area.

Popular etymology says the term derives from the nickname "Old Hickory" for Andrew Jackson, one of the first Presidents of the United States to come from rural hard-scrabble roots. This nickname suggested that Jackson was tough and enduring like an old Hickory tree. Jackson was particularly admired by the residents of remote and mountainous areas of the United States, people who would come to be known as "hicks." The Oxford English Dictionary says it was "by-form" of the personal name Richard (like Dick) and Hob (like Bob) for Robert.

let's see... i would guess that a redneck works outside, in the sun... a hillbilly would be someone who lives extremely secluded in rural mountains... a hick and a bumpkin i would suppose are close in similarity being that they would simply be lesser educated, country simpletons (sorry if that is offensive) who only really know their simple, country lifestyles.
