The government isn't. It's a few, crazy God-haters who want to take every reference to Him out of our society so they can replace Him with the State as the entity to which we are to turn for ultimate help and guidance. Now, we pray to God for help and guidance when we come up against something in our lives we can't handle. These wackos want the government to be the final source for what is now given to us by our faith. When the government is the final source for every need in your life, you are truly a slave. The slaves of 150 years ago prayed to God as they picked cotton in the fields by singing spirituals as they worked. The plantation owners didn't know the slaves were actually praying as they sang. The prayers got the slaves through their day and through their lives. It's all they had to maintain their hope for a better day. God moved and in 1863, Lincoln freed the slaves. The rest is history.

Actually, no. It's been in the pledge since the 1950s, and was added to distinguish the US from the Russian communists. Around the same time "equality" was removed from the phrase "with justice, quality and liberty for all".

And it's not the government trying. It's people who oppose the concept of the government saying that the official way to support this country is to swear that this nation is under God.

For some reason, people think that the constitutional prohibition against government sponsorship of religion should also apply to references to God in official government pledges. Completely ignoring that the prohibition against religious oaths was in the original Constitution (Article VI) before the 1st Amendment ever was adopted.

A smart person aren't you?? The words under god were not in the pledge until the 1950's Ike( Pres Eisenhower) put those words in to counter the godless communist USSR. They were not part of the original pledge and never should have been inserted to begin with. God favors NO country. There are many ways to God and the arrogant, loud, holier than thou, my country was founded under God religious right are ruining this country with misinformation and innuendos. I just hope that the next President puts the brakes on that and I will work to help whoever says that they will.

There are some who are petitioning the government to get rid of "under God" in the pledge ... incidentally, the words "under God" have not been around for more than 50+ years ... they were added to the pledge in 1953 for some mysterious reason .....

Nope, try again. Those words have only been in the pledge since 1954.
The original pledge (the one written 214 years ago) didn't have the words "under God" in it; nor for that matter did it say "the United States of America".

Under God has only been in the pledge for about 50 years....and they are not....in fact....I do believe the congress passed a law that no court could take it out of the Pledge......it may get changed someday....but it won't be because of atheist in this country.....

yes, under god was added by Congress to make the pledge "less communist" in 1954 ... since the separation of church and state issue has become literal...i guess atheists are offended the pledge doesn't include the citizens "not under god"?

Our Government is not trying to take "IN GOD WE TRUST" off
the Pledge of Allegiance, it's the stupid atheists and the Commie ACLU. Get your facts straight.

That would be the work of the ACLU and the Liberals. They want all references to God be removed including the celebration of Christmas as the celebration of the birth of Jesus, they think it should be known as a winter holiday.
