The two terms have become interchangeable in the modern era. Republic sounds a little formal but most people understand that democracy equates roughly to the rule of the people. But if you read Greek philosophy, you know that a democracy is the corrupted form of a republic being a sort of "mob rule" society.

Of course, looking at many of our politicians on both sides of the aisle, maybe we do live in a democracy...
