There are two types of data bases, Flat and Relational. The flat allows limited aspects of queries and data it can put out. Relational Data bases are built for queries, complex sort functions just to mention a couple of attributes. The most popular database I am familiar with is Microsoft's Access. You can get it individually or with a package of other Microsoft products. To really get a good understanding of data bases, check out the colleges in your area. You may be able to just pick up that course by itself.

Are you importing it into another mysql database?

If so, then the best way is to export your existing database as a .sql file and import it into your new database.

I suggest that you use phpMyAdmin. You will find it very easy to import and export using phpMyAdmin. If you want to import a large .sql file, i suggest that you use bigdump.
